Disabled students show off their culinary skills by helping local soup kitchen

It’s a sad reality, but those with special needs are often pushed aside and asked to fend for themselves. But things are a little different in George, Western Cape. Up with Down’s is a special school that teaches practical skills to children and young adults with different abilities.

According to Good things man, the school has 21 learners and 17 adults in its training center. While the main aim of the school is to provide basic education (e.g. literacy and life skills), the training center aims to develop the life skills of young adults, which includes cooking, baking and sewing.

Jan Seegmuller, the director of the center, heard about an opportunity to put the culinary skills of the young adult to the test. Seegmuller approached a local soup kitchen in the hopes that it would allow them to do good to the community while showing off their cooking skills.

Tanya Holtzhausen decided to share her thoughts on this incredible initiative:

“Our small school, Up with Down’s Center for Learners with Special Needs in George, has started a program at their training center that makes 20 liters of soup each week for a soup kitchen for the neighboring township of Blanco.

Each class (there are only five) has a turn to give the ingredients and lend a hand to prepare the soup ”, she declares.

Feeling incredibly proud of this small school and all that the learners have achieved, Holtzhausen continues to applaud their efforts to make their community a better place.

“I am very proud that our small school, with learners facing many challenges themselves, has found a way to make a difference in the lives of others and in doing so gives our children a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem. Other small centers can really learn from Up with Down’s!
